Teesside chemical company SABIC is sponsoring part of the annual festival that kicks off this Friday (October 14) with the opportunity for Teessiders to visit the top of the iconic Transporter Bridge.

Visitors can catch a bus from Middlesbrough’s Holiday Inn Express on Centre Square or travel direct to the bridge between 5pm and 10pm on Friday before taking the glass lift to the top of the bridge for a bird’s eye view of Teesside at night.

As part of a family arts event called Nightfall, the night-time theme continues with SABIC also hosting Wilton’s Industry at Night Photo Exhibition, starting this Friday October 14 through to Monday October 31.

Taking place at the Transporter Bridge Visitor Centre, the exhibition features exclusive images taken by professional photographer Marc Thorneycroft of Photoworks and two SABIC employees, self-taught professional landscape photographer Stephen Hornsey and semi-professional commercial Mike Walker.

The final event in the Discover Middlesbrough calendar is Wilton’s Industry at Night, with the general public invited on a behind-the-scenes coach tour of the Wilton International site.

The SABIC-sponsored tour will give visitors a close-up opportunity to see the dramatic industrial skyline that inspired director Ridley Scott’s opening to classic sci-fi film Blade Runner.

After the tour, there is an opportunity to join SABIC for refreshments in the Wilton Centre.

SABIC’s Wilton Site Director John Bruijnooge said: “SABIC is delighted to take part in the Discover Middlesbrough Festival.

“After nearly a decade of operating on Teesside, we have established strong roots within the local community. Through this festival, it will be fantastic for more Teessiders to discover more about what we actually do.”

  • Opening times for the photography exhibition are Mon-Fri 9am-4.30pm, Sat 9.30am-3pm and Sun 9am-4pm.
  • There is limited capacity for the tour of Wilton’s Industry at Night. To book, email events@middlesbrough.gov.uk. Please note the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users.
