Northern League Division Two side Willington A.F.C yesterday won two categories at the 7th Annual Onion Bag Awards 2016/17.
They won Favourite Non-League Ground Visited: “In my mind, it’s a ‘temple’ of north-east football. Quirky, charming, and beautiful” The Onion Bag
Most Friendliest Club Welcome (North) “The levels of their friendliness held no boundaries.They deserve an OB (Onion Bag) Award and a visit to Willington comes with my very highest recommendation” The Onion Bag.
Shaun Cooper also got a special mention “His passion and incurable optimism for the club shines through so brightly”
Club Chairman, Richard Tremewan said: “It’s really fantastic that our volunteers have been recognised in this way. It is great that all of the unpaid hours they put in their spare time hasn’t gone unnoticed. It is the volunteers of non-league clubs like ours that are the heartbeat of the club and without them, we wouldn’t exist. It makes me really proud to be involved with a club like Willington”
