North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

“Over the moon” residents have moved into 32 high-quality new homes on the site of a former pub in North Shields.

north_tyneside_councilProviding a mix of contemporary houses, bungalows and apartments, the development has brought back to life the wasteland where the Brigg Public House once stood, and the surrounding area.

The homes have been created by Galliford Try Partnerships North, supported by North Tyneside Council.

It is part of the local authority’s ongoing work to create 3,000 extra homes within 10 years, to meet the borough’s most urgent and future housing needs.

And one family set to benefit is Stacey and Robert McGregor and their three children.

On Tuesday lunchtime (October 27), North Tyneside Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn will officially hand over the keys to their new three-bedroom bungalow, which has been designed to help their son, Daniel.

Aged 12, Daniel has cerebral palsy, epilepsy and severe brain damage.

Speaking about their new home, mum Stacey said: “We are over the moon with the bungalow, we cried when we first viewed it!

“Our previous home was a terraced house with stairs; we had a through-floor lift to help Daniel, but we felt frightened to use it through the night in case it woke the neighbours. It also meant Daniel was restricted to certain rooms, and we had to carry him in the front door because of a step.

“This new home will be 100 percent easier, we can live more comfortably. The space and layout is amazing, and Daniel can now access the entire home and level access to the front and rear is a massive help. The home certainly suits our needs.

“The best thing about it has to be the separate en-suite shower room for Daniel, and the back garden is lovely and suitable for a wheelchair.”

The development was designed in consultation with the community to match local housing requirements. It includes open spaces, landscaping and car parking, and almost half of the new homes have level access shower rooms.

Mayor Redfearn said: “It’s extremely heartening to hear what a real difference the bungalow will make to Daniel and his family. I’d like to wish them every happiness in their new home, as well as all the other new residents on the development.

“The council is delighted to have worked with Galliford Try to bring the land on Blandford Road back to life, by creating these beautiful and modern homes.”

Cllr John Harrison, cabinet member for Housing and Transport, added: “The variety of different types of housing at this development reflects the broad range of requirements we have in North Tyneside.

“Demand for affordable housing continues to rise, particularly for bungalows, single-bed properties and affordable family homes. We have worked closely with the local community to plan this scheme, ensuring we’re putting the right homes in the right places.”

Foster Innes, Operations Director with Galliford Try Partnerships North, also added:  “Our goal is to improve the quality and choice of homes for people across the North East.  To see just what this can mean for residents who move into the properties we build is always heart-warming and we are delighted for Daniel and his family.”

The scheme has six two-bedroom bungalows; two three-bedroom accessible bungalows; eight two-bedroom houses and two three-bedroom houses. In addition, there’s also a block of fourteen apartments with a mix of one and two-bedroom homes. All have been made available at affordable rents
