Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Overnight closures planned for A1 near Gateshead

s300_M42_dusk_940x600Further closures are planned along a stretch of the A1 near Gateshead as part of a major project to add an extra lane to the dual carriageway.

From Sunday 8 November to Friday 20 November the northbound A1 will be closed between junction 69 at Gateshead Quays and junction 71 at Metro Centre between 8pm and 6am, including weekends. This is to allow changes to be made to the traffic management.

The southbound carriageway between junction 73 at Derwenthaugh and junction 68 at Lobley Hill will continue to be closed overnight until Monday 16 November, including weekends, to carry out resurfacing work.

Work will continue overnight on the central reservation until Friday 20 November, Monday to Friday, between junction 67 at Coal House and junction 69 on the northbound carriageway and between junction 69 and junction 68 on the southbound carriageway.

Highways England project manager Lynne Biddles said:

We understand that there are a lot of closures on the A1 at the moment but it is essential that this work takes place.

This work has been brought forward from the new year in order to minimise the impact for drivers during the new year/January sales. It will be done overnight when traffic levels are at their lowest and will be removed in time for the start of Christmas shopping.

Clearly signed diversions will be in place, including a diversion for heavy goods vehicles from junction 66 at Eighton Lodge and junction 77 for the A696.

The closures are part of the £61 million A1 Coal House to Metro Centre improvement scheme which will see the number of lanes increased from two to three in both directions between the Coal House junction and the Metro Centre junction.

More details are available on the scheme website.
