Popular fitness class gets biking boost

bikes 3More people are being encouraged to get fit by taking part in Cyclenergy classes thanks to the purchase of 11 new cutting-edge design Technogym bikes at Freeman’s Quay Leisure Centre in Durham City.

The purchase means there are now 25 bikes available for the classes, which have proven to be immensely popular with class bookers and gym members.

Steven Gardiner the Health and Fitness Coordinator at the centre, said: “The classes are based on a static cycle so they are low impact. It’s fascinating to see how many people come along all for very different reasons including injury recovery, weight loss and all round better health and it’s great to see them returning week after week”.

During a single Cyclenergy class, the body can burn 300-500 calories greatly increasing cardiovascular ability and the class is structured to push participants through different types of cycling scenarios including hill climbs and sprint work.

Garry Stout who has been attending the classes for around five years, said: “I love the classes simply because they are great fun. The instructors provide a context for the work and explain the routines. Each instructor makes sure to welcome and include everyone in the class. There is a great sense of comradeship as a result!”

Freeman’s Quay holds Cyclenergy classes every day except Sunday. Classes are included in the gym membership package or can be paid for on a class by class basis. For a full timetable and further information about membership opportunities, visit www.durham.gov.uk/freemansquayleisurecentre
