Middlesbrough’s 5 star cafe, Jean’s Kitchen, has spent over £15,000 on refurbishments.
Owners, Jean Hall and her husband Ron, have invested time and money in to the revamp of their business in Dundas Market in the popular Dundas Shopping Centre, Middlesbrough.
Work on the 23-year-old business included, new tables, chairs and menus, stainless steel kitchen worktops, a serving counter, upgraded oven and pizza oven. To compliment the new ceiling, lighting and floor coverings were also recently installed by the Landlord.
The improvement works at Dundas Market undertaken by the Landlord, Contract Experts Limited, gave Jean the confidence to invest in her business.
Contract Experts Limited took over the former InShops Centre in January 2014, and is responsible for the rebranding and investment in Dundas Market, to create a permanent, indoor market.
Its plan has included a rebrand of the market, building an online social community, delivering a marketing and events calendar to encourage new visitors to come and experience Dundas Market, as well as offering an ideal town centre location for local independent businesses to trade from, on flexible terms and cost effective rates.
Jeans Kitchen owner, Jean, 59, has certainly seen a rise in popularity for her good value meal deals, hearty homemade food and afternoon tea treats.
Originally, Jeans Kitchen was a sandwich bar where Jean worked with her 16-year colleague, Louise Matthews, who started on a youth training scheme. 23 years on and Louise is still working with Jean and her team.
It was just over 15 years ago Jean decided to expand her business into a café style eaterie with a lot of personality to it.
“Our customers are our family.” says Jean.
“Over the years I’ve met some amazing people and I’ve visited our loyal customers in hospital and sadly had to attend some funerals along the way. That community spirit is missing in many cafes these days and that’s what we pride ourselves on.”
Jeans Kitchen has been home to many events over the years, including organised fundraising activities.
The most memorable being their participation in TFM’s Cash for Kids, and supporting Jeans granddaughter, local singer, Elle Wood.
Overall, the fundraising was a massive success, with the Jean and the team in Dundas Market raising over £4,000 in just 20 days.
“I’d say that is a highlight for us.” says Jean.
“The support we received was overwhelming, from bake sales, to us taking part in a 3km sponsored walk, it really was a united effort from every trader here in Dundas Market.”
From a celebrity visit from Liz McDonald to an ever-expanding work family, Jean’s Kitchen is certainly thriving and full of character.
