Riverside Capacity Increase Approved for New Season

BORO’S Riverside Stadium is to increase its capacity in time for next season’s promotion push.

The ground is to gain 250 seats this year, bringing its spectator capacity to 34,000. It comes after major changes were made last season to make the stadium fit for Middlesbrough’s promotion to the Premier League.

Councillors from Middlesbrough Council’s Licensing Committee re-issued a General Safety Certificate for the forthcoming 2017/18 season at a Town Hall meeting.

The meeting heard that the Riverside could be evacuated comfortably within the eight minute window stated in the guidelines.

The Safety Advisory Group (SAG) for the stadium had met in May and recommended a renewal based on the terms of increasing the stadium’s capacity.

The Safety at Sports Grounds Act 1975 established that a stadium with over 10,000 spectators requires a certificate to ensure spectators’ safety.
