Primary school pupils from Harton Primary in South Shields recently visited the Port of Tyne to learn more about the River Tyne and how goods are imported and exported around the world.
The group of 90 year 6 pupils, aged between 10 and 11-years-old are learning about the River Tyne’s imports, exports and economic activity as part of their geography and local history study.
Alison Chipchase, Head Teacher Harton Primary School, said: “It is great that the Port of Tyne were able to help; our year 6 students are learning about the river as part of the national curriculum and recognising the importance of a varied learning environment we thought visiting the Port would be an ideal opportunity.
“The students really enjoyed being able to see the Port first-hand – and being given the chance to observe cranes, ships and trains bringing goods in and out of the Tyne helped to really broaden their learning experience.”
Susan Wear, Director of Corporate Affairs Port of Tyne, said: “We were delighted to host the year 6 pupils, who were full of curiosity and enthusiasm, asking lots of questions.
“The Port of Tyne aims to be an active part of the local community and where possible we endeavour to accommodate community groups who want to visit.”
