A Teesside based recruitment company is celebrating 10 years in business this month, having placed over 600 candidates in science and industry roles across the UK during that time.

Techconsult UK was set up by managing director Steve Guest at the Wilton Centre near Redcar in 2006 and has evolved over the past decade, ramping up turnover from £100k in year one to £3million in the latest financial year.

Techconsult now employs a team of four recruitment specialists who are focused on finding candidates for roles in the process and petrochemical, oil and gas, renewable, subsea, science and biotechnology and civil engineering sectors.  Its success and growth is owed to its ability to adapt to industry trends, refocusing its business on growth areas such as biotechnology, chemicals and civil engineering following the downturn in oil and gas.

Techconsult works with clients including the Centre for Process Innovation, CatalySystems, Invista, Plaxica, PX Group, Huntsman and AMEC Foster Wheeler, and has provided many people with support to advance their careers in a variety of permanent and contract managerial, engineering, technical and support roles covering the full breadth of science and industry.

Garry Ingoldsby, business development manager at the Materials Processing Institute (MPI) in Teesside, was helped to revive his career in the engineering sector after receiving support from Techconsult UK.  The former engineering apprentice undertook a number of senior roles with large multinationals before changing direction and running his own print and design business for five years.

Garry, who is responsible for building relationships with customers operating in the offshore energy and engineering sectors at MPI, said: “I enjoyed the experience of running my own business, however I had a strong desire to get back into engineering so I contacted Techconsult UK.  They understood my passion and capability and went about finding the most suitable role to best match the client and my own skill set.  My current role at MPI is the second position where Techconsult has placed me and they have both been an excellent match.”

Meanwhile, former apprentice Neil Murch is working as commercial manager at world-leading industrial technology company Tracerco after receiving a helping hand from Techconsult UK.  He said:  “Techconsult offered me some good advice throughout the recruitment process and were knowledgeable about the company, which helped me plan for the first stage interview.

“My role is extremely varied and rewarding.  I travel all over the world meeting new people , working in different cultures and environments and maintaining relationships with existing customers which is vital for securing any future business.

Techconsult has recently appointed renowned business strategy consultant Gary Lumby to help develop and implement the company’s growth strategy, broadening the company’s service offering to capitalise on opportunities in other industries including civil engineering, construction, IT and the financial sectors, while developing the businesses core technical resourcing offer.

Steve commented: “In order to strengthen our position here in the North East and capitalise on opportunities in other parts of the UK, it was the right time to invest in bringing someone of Gary’s capability, track-record, networks and experience in growing companies on board.  He’s already proving to be a real asset to the business as we diversify our service offer and he has also introduced us to a number of influential business leaders across the region, relationships which I hope will further cement our growth.”

Techconsult UK is part of the Norwegian-owned Techconsult Group. It has a large number of candidates on its database, including engineers, technicians, project managers and technical administration personnel.  The company, which has a strong foothold within the North East has ambitions to capitalise on growth opportunities in technology hubs across the UK.
