Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Scouts from Washington Clean Up as part of the Can DO Fund

  • Over 80 beaver, cubs, scouts and adult leaders will clean up areas around Concord, Front Street and Oxclose Village Centre on Saturday, 21 October 2017.

  • A grant was awarded by Washington Area Committee SIB Fund, after the young people applied and presented their ideas to a panel of Washington Councillors to enable the Scouts to receive an Environmental Badge.

  • Groundwork North East and Cumbria have also supported the Scouts by delivering sessions on waste and recycling at their educational centre called Campground in Springwell, and contributed towards ideas  and designs for a poster campaign urging people to ‘dump their junk’ in the bin not the street.

  • Local businesses along Concord Front Street also contributed a number a raffle prizes to help raise funds for the charity which is greatly appreciated.

  • Work will include tidying up rubbish left by people on the streets and in bushes, cutting back vegetation which is over hanging the footpaths, building bug hotels to encourage wildlife and paint over graffiti.

  • 3rd Washington Scouts aims to support local communities with events that have an impact on the local area and enable scouts to give a little something back to the local community. The charity chose the sites as a thank you to their hosts, where the Scouts operate from at St Andrews Church, Concord and Oxclose Primary School.

  • It’s a great example of partnership working, with businesses, charities and Sunderland Council coming together to improve the quality of the environment in local communities.  A St Andrews Scout said, ‘Thanks very much to the City Council’s Washington Area Committee who invited us to meet them, and we gave a presentation, and everyone enjoyed it.  They were totally lush councillors, like. and the officers were really nice and helpful.  The problem is though, there are too many people who do not care about messing up their community’
