Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Sharon and Lady ‘hit the jackpot’ with new home

A Wearside family are celebrating after moving into a brand new home, thanks to an expansion by one of the region’s largest social landlords.

Sharon Humphries, her son, and their dog Lady, have picked up the keys to a brand new home in Chilton Moor, near Houghton-le-Spring.

The home is one of the first in the Sunderland area to be offered for affordable rent by County Durham Housing Group as part of a £30m expansion programme and is one of seven to be built for the group by developers Persimmon at its Rainton Meadows development.

Sharon, who had been on the waiting list for a new affordable home in the Sunderland area has lived nearby for many years.

“I’ve been helped through every step of the way.” Sharon said. “It was perfect timing for me, it’s really good that County Durham Housing Group have started offering homes in this area.

“I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot. My son and our dog, Lady, have settled in straightaway. We’re just around the corner from my parents too.”

Kate Abson, County Durham Housing Group Head of Development and Commercial Property, said: “We’ve been actively looking to bring more affordable homes to the people that need them in new parts of the north east. This partnership with Persimmon will allow us to offer high quality homes to families outside of the immediate Durham area for the first time. We’re delighted that Sharon and her family are settling in well.”

Neil Foster, Managing Director for Persimmon Homes Durham, said: “This joint venture will deliver more homes in the communities where they are most needed.

“We are really pleased with the progress made on this project and look forward to providing further good quality accommodation for families in the area.”

Three of the seven homes available for affordable rent through County Durham Housing Group at Rainton Meadows have already completed, and interest in the remaining properties is high. For more information call 0191 349 7777.
