Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Siblings Success in National Regional Championships

Siblings Success in National Regional ChampionshipsFollowing on from winning the regional qualifying event in February, Leo and Luca Pontone took part in the National Inter-regional event at Kettering Sports Arena. Saturday was the team event with both brothers teaming up with players from Ormesby table tennis club to make the North East region teams.

Leo as part of the Under 11 boys team came as winners picking up 3-0 wins over the East Midlands, the North West and the West Midlands before a gripping 3-2 over the top seeds East region to reach the final against the South East. The final saw Leo and his team-mate hold nerves of steel as they secured the Gold winning 3-0.

In the under 13s, Luca and his team mate had additional pressure, starting the event as top seeds. However, they kept their cool picking up 3-0 win over East Midlands, South West and East teams. The only game dropped was against London but the boys still won 3-1 to reach the final against the North West. The final was a tight match but the boys justified their top seed position, coming out as Champions.

The Sunday saw the singles events take place: Luca successfully made his way out of his U13 group before going down in the last 16 to the 6th seed. Leo was not interested in the seedings in his U11 event.  The 10-year-old won his group, beating the 5th seed to reach the last 16 then kept up his winning ways to the Semi-final where he met top seed Harry Derecki from London coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and claim his place in the final. The final saw Leo take on Giorgios Gerakios of the East Midlands where he won 3-1, taking the U11 title. The results and victories Leo picked up should see Leo move into the top 20 on the national ranking list just in time for the National Championships next month.
