South Tyneside joined a host of other authorities, community groups and charities throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man as simultaneously at 10am flags were flown to celebrate Commonwealth Day.

The Mayor said: “It was a pleasure to join people across the country and the Commonwealth to show our support for Commonwealth Day by raising the flag at Jarrow Town Hall.

“The ceremony symbolises unity with members of the worldwide Commonwealth community and our commitment to upholding the values set out in the Commonwealth Charter.”

The theme of this year’s Commonwealth Day is ‘An Inclusive Commonwealth’ to celebrate the diversity of the Commonwealth’s 53 member countries and its people.
