South Tyneside Tunes up for a Month of Music

Screen Shot 2015-05-06 at 15.34.46FROM Britpop to brass, South Tyneside will be making music next month (June) as part of a packed programme of family events.

Throughout June, some of the borough’s major attractions have lined up live performances as South Tyneside’s ‘Treasures 2015’ programme enters full swing.

South Tyneside Council has once again joined forces with Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums and Bede’s World, Jarrow, to bring families a packed schedule of events, running now until September.

And, along with displays, exhibitions and interactive activities, The Treasures of South Tyneside 2015 programme will feature music of all types at venues across South Tyneside.

At Arbeia Roman Fort, South Shields, on Sunday 7 June from 1pm to 4pm, three local artists – Arbeia, Too Spicy and Cortney Dixon – will perform outdoors in front of the West Gate.

Then, on Friday 12 June, from 7.30pm, South Shields super group Rivelino will be performing a variety of covers with humour and audience participation. Both events are free.

The following week, Friday 19 June, from 2.30pm to 3.30pm, acoustic duo Fool’s Gold will perform Beat the Drum, commemorating The First World War through music and imagery. Tickets for Beat the Drum cost £4.

On Sunday 28 June, Arbeia will be hosting its annual, free, Proms at the Fort, from 2pm to 4pm. Visitors are encouraged to bring picnics, blankets and chairs to enjoy South Tyneside Orchestra performing ‘prom’ favourites.

Also in June there will be the chance to enjoy a wide range of free live music, organised by South Tyneside Council as part of the South Tyneside Festival, at the open-air Amphitheatre at Sandhaven Beach, South Shields.

Every Thursday and Saturday evening, from 7pm to 9pm, there will be performances from bands including The Alan Hull Songbook and Britpop band Dodgy, while the Amphitheatre will also pay host to brass bands, every Sunday from 2pm to 4pm.

In addition, Bede’s World, Jarrow, will be holding its annual Folk Festival and Rivet Catcher music festivals over the summer, where more than 40 musicians will perform over two weekends, as well as its monthly Hive Live events, which showcase local acts every third Friday of the month.

June’s Hive Live Lounge event, featuring a range of different music genres, takes place on Friday 19 June until 10.30pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm. The event is open to over 12s only and entry is free.
