A leading North East dentist is marking three decades of success since putting down roots at a renowned practice in the heart of the Stanley community.

Dr Onkar Dhanoya, principal dentist and clinical lead at the family-run Osborne Dental Group, is celebrating 30 years at the helm of Stanley Dental – a long established practice based on Front Street in Stanley.

After graduating from Newcastle University in 1985, Dr Dhanoya and his colleague Dr Chopra took over the Stanley practice from the late Dr Gordon Smales in 1986, whose father had established it in 1922.

Stanley Dental is a member of the British Dental Association (BDA) Good Practice Scheme and provides the full range of NHS treatments, as well as a number of private treatments including tooth whitening, dental implants and orthodontics. It is one of several prototype practices across the UK, which involves working closely with the Department of Health to pilot new ways of delivering NHS care.

Dr Dhanoya also represents the region on a number of dental committees and sits on the board of the Faculty of General Dental Practice. Last year, he was awarded a Fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons (London) in recognition of his dental achievements.

Over the course of his career, Dr Dhanoya has opened two further sites – Osborne Dental in Jesmond, and Ponteland Dental, which both join Stanley Dental to form the Osborne Dental Group.

The 30-year milestone comes at a time when Dr Dhanoya is welcoming the next generation of the family to the group – as his daughter Dr Gulshan Dhanoya (pictured) joins the team as an associate dentist.

Gulshan, who has known she wanted to become a dentist ever since she visited the Stanley practice with her dad as a young child, graduated from the University of Valencia this summer with before returning home to the North East to progress her dental career.

Dr Onkar Dhanoya said: “I’m delighted to be celebrating 30 years at Stanley Dental – time has flown. I’m very proud of the dedicated team we have here, as we’re essentially an extended family, and many of us have worked closely together for 20 years.

“We have treated generations of families throughout the area and it’s very rewarding for us to have become a renowned, trusted name in the local community. It’s a very exciting time for Gulshan to join us too.”

The 30-year celebration also heralds a major re-launch for the Osborne Dental Group, as all three practices will shortly be rebranding as Honour Health.

Dr Dhanoya explained: “In the past 30 years, we have learnt so much about how we can help patients to improve their health. We now know that there are bilateral links between dental disease and conditions such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, stroke and Alzheimer’s. Because of this, we believe that dental health should not be separated from general health, and this belief underpins the way we look after our patients.

“That’s why we’ve decided to rebrand as Honour Health. We believe the name better represents the services we provide and the ideology we follow. We want to communicate a message to the local community of the importance of maintaining good general health, and our philosophy is to concentrate on preventative dentistry.

Patients will soon see changes to our website, our signage and our literature, but they can rest assured they’ll be treated by the same talented team, who will work with them to improve not just their dental health, but also their general health and wellbeing.

“We’re very excited about becoming Honour Health and embarking on this new chapter in our history. Here’s to the next 30 years!”

There are major plans to expand the range of skin treatments offered at the three practices, under the banner of ‘Honour Health Skin’, to include skin rejuvenation treatments, laser hair removal, muscle relaxants and fillers, bespoke skin peels, facials and brow treatments.
