HUNDREDS of people descended on Stockton Town Centre yesterday to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.
The highlight of the special day was the launch of the town’s newest visitor attraction – The Stockton Flyer.
The large industrial looking contraption emerged whistling and steaming from the plinth on the High Street surrounded by cheering crowds.
The whimsical automaton whirred into action as part of a street party themed event which saw more than 300 community stalwarts, volunteers and carers join the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, Pam Royle and the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Councillor Ken Dixon for an afternoon tea.
People of all ages enjoyed a whole host of family fun activities and picnicked on the High Street.
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Norma Wilburn, said: “What a fantastic day it was and it was so nice to see so many of the people who do so much for our community come together for a well-deserved thank you. The launch of the Stockton Flyer was the icing on the cake.
“It’s a day I, and I’m sure many of the people who attended, will remember for many years to come. I can think of no better way to mark the Queen’s birthday than with a fun-filled party and the unveiling of such a unique attraction which will entertain visitors who come to Stockton for many generations to come.”
The Stockton Flyer is a permanent attraction which will entertain shoppers and visitors once each day.
