Work has started on much-needed improvements to streets and pavements in the Stobhillgate estate in Morpeth.
The works are part of a scheme aimed at improving the area for both pedestrians, and drivers and comes after local councillor Ian Lindley successfully made the case for what will be around £50,000 of investment in the area.
Funded by Northumberland County Council, the scheme aims to improve pedestrian safety by developing drop kerbs at all key crossroads to improve accessibility, with each crossing point being protected by a decorative bollard. There will also be some other minor repairs to damaged kerbstones and potholes along these routes.
The area where the work is centred around includes Shields Road and the local shops, and the Avenues and streets near to Stobhillgate First School.
Ward County Councillor for the Stobhill, Ian Lindley, said: “These much needed improvements start to address safety and aesthetic issues here.
“The biggest problem, in common with many areas, is the number of vehicles, and the occasional anti-social driver. I want to ensure maximum access and safety especially for more vulnerable users such as pushchairs, the disabled and young children.
“I am also pressing for further improvements in future years for enhancements to the streetscape in the area, with an emphasis on maximising the number of safe parking spaces available as well as having better street and pavement surfaces.
Councillor Ian Swithenbank, cabinet member for local services at Northumberland County Council added: “The council is fully committed to improving environments for pedestrians, drivers and other users of public space. This scheme will also help to make the area much more accessible for local residents of all ages and abilities.”
