STUDENTS were given a tantalising glimpse of cycling silverware to inspire them in their preparations for the Tour de Yorkshire.

Welcome to Yorkshire trophy custodian Alan Rowley brought the cycle race prizes to Richmond School and Sixth Form College where students are hard at work painting wooden bikes to decorate the course.

Richmond has been chosen to stage one of the starts of the prestigious event which this year takes place from May 3-6.

Year 7 and 8 students are painting 100 wooden bicycles provided by the Town Council for local shops to display as well as working with primary school children to make bunting. May 5 will see Richmond transformed into a cycling carnival as the annual race sets off on its next stage.

Assistant headteacher Scott Lunn said: “We have some really keen and competitive cyclists at school and seeing the Tour de Yorkshire silverware has been a real privilege.

“Students are tremendously excited by the prospect of the race starting here and have been working tirelessly painting the wooden bikes and making some fine bunting for the event.”
