Screen Shot 2015-05-26 at 15.37.10Darlington College has teamed up with Star Radio in a bid to offer students the opportunity to experience a real life working environment, while gaining their qualifications.

As part of the unique partnership, students enrolled at The Star Academy of Broadcasting and Digital Journalism will get to work at the Darlington based radio station every Friday, helping to pull together news stories, write press releases and get involved in the production of shows.

When back at the college, students will be taught by industry professionals, as well as having access to the latest industry-standard video and radio facilities.

The Star Academy is the brain child of Star Radio’s managing director, John Clayton, and director of corporate, community and education, Lesley Boyle.

John said: “We are really excited about The Star Academy and the partnership with Darlington College.

“As a local radio station and a business, we believe it is important to work closely within the community and to offer our support at all levels.

“Students who enrol on courses at the academy will not only get the opportunity to experience what it is like to work at a fully functioning and popular radio station, but they will also gain life skills which are transferable from one career path to another.”

Much to the delight of Darlington students, the Star Radio Academy was officially launched with an intimate gig by Ed Sheeran’s supporting act – Antonia Lulic – at The Keys nightclub.

Speaking about the launch, curriculum manager for media and journalism, Alan Jones said: “We are delighted this exciting and unique course has been launched in great style by Antonio.

“This was the first of our ‘Star Gigs’ at Darlington College and marks the beginning of an exciting venture between the college and Star Radio, offering youngsters a great opportunity to kick-start careers in journalism, presenting, radio production and marketing.”
