Summer Reading Challenge Volunteers Wanted

logo-landscapeStockton-on-Tees Borough Council is calling on young volunteers to help out with this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Stockton Libraries, in partnership with The Reading Agency, will once again launch the Summer Reading Challenge for young people aged four to 11 years old. The annual challenge invites children to read six books during the summer holidays, encouraging them into libraries to keep up their reading skills and confidence during the school break.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council is now calling on volunteers to help staff run the Summer Reading Challenge – this year with a theme of ‘The Big Friendly Read’ which links with the global year-long Roald Dahl 100 celebrations to honour the famous storyteller 100 years after his birth.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to talk to children about the books they’ve been reading, help them to choose new books, and deliver exciting summer activities and craft sessions.

Sarah Hurst is one of the volunteers who helped with the Summer Reading Challenge last year. She said: “Being a volunteer for the Summer Reading Challenge is a great opportunity to build your confidence and meet new people while helping others. I really recommend it.”

Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, added: “This is a really rewarding opportunity for teenagers and young adults to encourage younger children to continue reading throughout the summer holidays and help develop their skills and confidence. It’s also a great chance to gain some excellent work experience, an employment reference, and make a positive contribution to the community. I hope people give their time to be part of the challenge.”

Anyone aged 16 to 24 can apply but must be able to volunteer for a minimum of 10 hours between June and September. The deadline to register is Friday 27 May.
