Screen Shot 2016-01-21 at 10.14.57YOUNG people from across Sunderland will be getting first-hand knowledge of a career in advanced manufacturing at a special event.

As part of the Work Discovery Sunderland programme, a number of sector days are organised to give youngsters the opportunity to get an in-depth look at a particular industry.

And on January 28 around 150 pupils from many of the city’s secondary schools will get the inside track on advanced manufacturing, at a day hosted at the Nissan plant in Sunderland.

Experts from Nissan and organisations including automotive parts company Calsonic Kansei, crane manufacturer Liebherr, Lear Corporation and the North East Automotive Alliance will share information with the young people about job opportunities in the sector.

The young people will also hear from a number of trainees from each company, who will tell them about their employment journey.

The sector days are part of the Work Discovery Sunderland programme which also includes guest speaker days and the annual Work Discovery Week, which involves hundreds of young people in a wide range of activities.

Work Discovery Sunderland was created by Sunderland’s Economic Leadership Board Business:Schools Task Group four years ago to help students develop their employability skills and get an insight into various industries before they embark on their careers.

Paul McEldon, co-chair of the Task Group said the advanced manufacturing day offered a valuable opportunity to Sunderland’s young people.

“This is an extremely important industry to the North East and this day will give pupils the opportunity to see the many and varied job possibilities available in this sector” said Paul.

“It is not very often that there are so many experts in this field in one room together so this provides an excellent chance for young people to really find out about the options open to them.”

Plans are also underway for the next Work Discovery Week, which will be held from June 27 to July 1.
