YOUNG people from across Sunderland will be learning some new lessons this week – to teach them about working in education.
As part of the city’s Work Discovery Sunderland programme, an education sector day is being held on Wed (June 10), hosted by Sunderland College.
Around 200 students will take part in a careers’ fair and a number of workshops, all highlighting different jobs in education.
Sessions on working in nursery, primary and secondary schools, at further education colleges, with training providers and at university have been planned, to give young people a complete picture of the many jobs available in the sector.
The Work Discovery Sunderland programme has grown out of Work Discovery Week – which this year runs from June 29 to July 3 – and includes specialised sector days and inspirational speaker days.
The aim of the initiative is for students in schools across Sunderland to build relationships with businesses from across the region and to improve their employability and future job prospects.
Anne Isherwood, Principal at Sunderland College, which is also a headline sponsor of Work Discovery Week, said the event would give young people a real insight into the education sector.
“There are a huge range of jobs available in education and this event will give students the opportunity to discover how wide reaching they are,” she said.
“Sunderland College is also delighted to be hosting this event and to be working with a range of other organisations to bring it together.”
This is the latest in a range of sector days to have been held in Sunderland, including a focus on hospitality, software, health, utilities and manufacturing.
Since Work Discovery Week was launched in 2013, set up by the city’s Economic Leadership Board Business Schools Task Group, the initiative has seen thousands of students benefit from the events with some of the region’s biggest employers sponsoring the programme.
Nissan, Gentoo, Sunderland University, Sunderland College and Arriva along with Sunderland City Council, SAFC and the NECC all support Work Discovery Week and are involved in the programme throughout the year.
