Stocksfield Golf Club is hosting a tournament with a difference on 24 June with a Superhero Charity Open in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Good pals, Andy Ward and Neil Henderson are behind the event which will see up to 250 generous players teeing off for a good cause.

Both are keen amateur golfers whose families have been touched by cancer. Neil, Club Captain at Stocksfield, recently lost his dad to the disease and Andrew’s father is in complete remission following aggressive treatment for blood cancer.

The friends have joined forces with their local club and are calling on ladies and gents to join in the fun and take to the fairways dressed as their favourite superhero to battle it out on the golf course and help them to raise their £10,000 target.

The tournament is backed by Newcastle Audi, who has donated a car for the hole in one competition. Other local businesses including Thompsons of Prudhoe, SCA, Tesco, and Red Hot Property, along with individual supporters have come on board to sponsor tee boxes and donate prizes.

Andy explains: “Macmillan Cancer Support provides an invaluable service to families. With one in three of the UK population affected by the disease and more than 350,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed every year; this illness is close to many people’s hearts.

“We’ve both had experience of cancer in our families and Macmillan provides an exceptionally important advice service, support network and often a lifeline for sufferers and their families, which is why we wanted to do something positive and fun to show our gratitude.

“We’ve had a great response so far both in terms of tee sponsors and entries but we are still encouraging more teams to come forward so that we have the maximum numbers. Anyone wanting to take part in the day or wishing to donate prizes for the evening charity auction should contact us.”

In addition to the golf tournament which is open to mixed teams, official and unofficial handicap players, there is a whole host of other activities taking place from mini competitions including best dressed superhero, beat the pro and ‘Happy Gilmore Longest Drive’ to an evening of live family entertainment with a BBQ and celebrity charity auction.

Entry fees are £20 per pair for members, £30 for a member with a guest and £40 for a pair of visitors. To book tee times go to the Super Hero Charity Open Day page on the Stocksfield Gold Club website at: www.stocksfieldgolfclub.co.uk.

Please note pairs must be made up of either official (Congu) or “non-official” handicap players – not both. Fancy Dress is optional.
