Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 10.51.50THE countdown is under way to a major musical extravaganza at one of the icons of the Teesside skyline.

The majestic Transporter Bridge will play host to a feast of acts as one of the key sites for this year’s BBC Music Day on Friday, June 3.

The day will also mark the official launch of the nearby Transporter Park, part of the major regeneration programme currently transforming Middlehaven.

The park opening will be carried out by children’s favourite Mr Bloom, as seen on CBeebies, at 1.30pm.

The Family Fun Day is being organised by Middlesbrough Council in celebration of the opening of Transporter Park and in support of BBC Music Day. A big screen in the park will broadcast music from the gondola.

A packed programme from 11am to 6pm will also feature the BBC interactive tent, community stage, arts and crafts, seed planting, a vintage tea room and a vintage car rally.

Under the 2016 theme of ‘Take It To The Bridge’, the Transporter will join more than 40 other iconic structures including London’s Tower Bridge and Tadcaster Bridge in Yorkshire providing a stunning backdrop for a day of unique musical collaborations.

Last year more than 15 million people across the UK tuned in to the inaugural Music Day which featured more than 20 live music events and more than 17 hours of coverage across TV and radio.

Phil Roberts, Head of Region for the North East and Cumbria said: “This is the second year we have celebrated BBC Music Day and the town of Middlesbrough will be alive with live music, supported by the BBC.

“I hope lots of people will be able to come down and enjoy the day, or if they can’t come along they can tune in on BBC Tees and BBC Look North.”

Councillor Lewis Young, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: “There’s a celebratory feel about the town following the visit of the Tour de Yorkshire and Boro’s promotion to the Premier League, and this is another chance to show the whole country what Middlesbrough is all about.

“The Transporter is one of the most recognisable locations in the North East, and will provide a fantastic backdrop for what promises to be a great day of music and entertainment.”
