Talk to focus on Hackworth brothers

A County Durham historian will reveal the inside story of the role her family played in the birth of the railways.

Jane Hackworth-Young will speak at Durham County Record Office, County Hall, about her great, great grandfather Timothy Hackworth and his younger brother Thomas.

The talk, entitled The Hackworth Brothers, will take place from 6.30pm to 8pm on Thursday, 20 July.

The brothers were both engineers and, although Timothy is by far the better known, both were involved in the construction of some of the first locomotives.

Dawn Layland, education and outreach archivist, said: “This promises to be a fascinating talk by a guest speaker who, as well as being a member of the Hackworth family, is an expert on the contribution her ancestors made to railway history.”

The session is part of a series of talks taking place at Durham County Record Office under the name of Third Thursday Talks. Talks cover topics ranging from the Durham Light Infantry and the First World War to changing fashions through the ages.

The talk is £5 per person. To book, call 03000 267 626.
