Staff at The Gables Care Home, on Highfield Road, arranged a party to mark the occasion – inviting members of the local community to join them.

Mary, who was born on 22nd September 1916, spent her career as a math teacher at the now demolished St Thomas’s Secondary School in Middlesbrough.

After hearing she would be celebrating her birthday without family, pupils from St Thomas More R C Primary School, on Erith Grove, offered to make birthday cards and presented them to Mary on her centenary.

Mary has also been a devout Catholic throughout her life and received a Lourdes medal for 50 years’ service in 2010. Father Stephen Maurghan from the Sacred Heart Church in Middlesbrough shared a few words at the birthday celebrations.

Mary was also joined by friend Kath Learmonth.

Chris Churchill, Home Manager at The Gables Care Home, said: “It is wonderful to see so many offer to celebrate Mary’s 100th Birthday with her – it shows Middlesbrough’s strong community spirit.

“We can’t thank everyone enough for all they’ve done. Mary had a wonderful day.”
