Redcar’s Terry Bywater, 33, got off to a strong start at the Paralympic Games in Rio, helping his wheelchair basketball side to win their first two preliminary matches.

The British men dominated on the opening day of these games, winning 93-31 against Algeria, following up with an 84-60 victory over Iran on Friday.

Experienced forward and double bronze medallist Bywater, put in two good performances, scoring 14 points in the match against Algeria and 16 against Iran, the latter being a much tougher game overall.

Great Britain and the United States currently lead the standings in group B with four points each.

A keen Middlesborough FC supporter, Bywater, who splits his time between the north east and Spain, made his major international debut at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.

The Redcar native, born without a tibia and fibula in his leg, was introduced to the sport through an open day in Middlesborough ran by local club The Teesside Lions.

Great Britain will meet host-nation Brazil on Saturday (Sunday 01:00 BST) and Germany on Sunday (16:15 BST).
