North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Screen Shot 2015-11-12 at 10.49.43Residents in an area of North Tyneside will be feeling warm and cosy this winter, thanks to a free ‘heat wrap’ around their homes.

The local authority has teamed-up with North Tyneside Warm Zone to help council tenants living on St Aidan’s Close, North Shields, save money on their fuel bills.

And now, the scheme to insulate the outside of the properties has been extended to the private homeowners living on the same street, at no cost.

After visiting St Aidan’s Close and seeing the work, Cllr John Stirling, cabinet member for Environment, said: “This project will make a huge difference to the energy efficiency of the properties and helps to reduce the borough’s carbon footprint.

“Importantly for those living on the street, the work will prevent excess heat from escaping and consequently lower their fuel bills.

“The insulation ‘wrap’ has also greatly improved the appearance of the properties, and I look forward to visiting again and seeing how the whole street looks once complete.”

“I must say big thank you to Warm Zone who has made this all possible by being able to offer full funding for the external wall insulation to all those living on St Aidan’s Close.”

Mrs Lloyd, who lives on the street, added: “I’m really looking forward to seeing this work completed on my property and feeling the benefits of having an insulated home.”

The council has been working in partnership with Warm Zone, a not-for-profit company, since 2008, to help residents apply for full or partial grants to pay for insulation and heating improvements.

If residents are in receipt of benefits, the company can also provide them with a free and confidential entitlement review to check they’re not missing out on any, like Pension Credits, Child Tax Credit, Disability Living Allowance, etc.

Over the last year, the partnership has seen over 180 heating and insulation projects delivered in borough homes and £191,000 in additional benefits secured for residents.

The work on the council properties at St Aidan’s Close is being carried out by Kier North Tyneside, on behalf of North Tyneside Council, and by Dyson Energy Services for the private homeowners.

Alan Milburn, from North Tyneside Warm Zone said: “It’s great to be able to help get the whole area insulated by working with the council, Kier and Dyson Energy Services. With the funding secured by Warm Zones, no one needed to miss out.”
