North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

ESTON centre will come alive this Saturday (18 August) as the SABIC Eston Nab Challenge Race runs into town.

The races begin at 10am from Eston Centre with a 5km and 10km race pushing runners to the limit as they scale the Eston hills, working their way up to the legendary Nab at the very top.

Treated to stunning views on the way up and down, the runners will cross the finish line back in Eston to cheering crowds.

An event village, running from 10am until 4pm, will be in full flow packed with market stalls, food stalls and free family fun.

The Eston Residents’ Association will host a heritage exhibition and competition featuring prizes of £30, £15 and £10 and the Eston & Normanby Allotment Forum competition for the best maintained allotments will award B&Q vouchers worth £150, £100 and £50 for the best three maintained allotments in Normanby, Teesville and Bankfields.

Representing local housing provider Coast & Country will be Glen Durrant. The Coast & Country housing manager is famous as the current BDO World Darts Champion and will have his trophy at the housing association’s stand.

Councillor Bob Norton, co-chair of the organising committee, said: “After more than a year of planning, I can hardly believe it’s here.

“We’ve been working really hard to bring this race to Eston and I’m sure we’re going to have a wonderful day.

“I hope lots of people come out to cheer on the runners and enjoy the event village.”

Councillor Ann Higgins, co-chair of the organising committee, said: “The event village will be a lot of fun.

“I’m particularly looking forward to the Eston Residents’ Association heritage exhibition. Our local history is very important to us – it’s a source of pride for many people. I hope those visiting Eston for the Nab will take the time to learn a little about our town and what makes Eston special.”

Event sponsor SABIC Site Director Daren Smith said: “We are delighted to support this race to encourage more people on Teesside and beyond to keep fit and to explore our beautiful region.

“We not only have wonderful views of the Eston Hills from our site but myself and other members of the SABIC team run up the Nab on a regular basis, as part of our health and wellbeing programme.

“The contrasting views from the top of the Nab, with the industry complex on one side and Roseberry Topping on the other, are well worth the effort.

“Good luck to everyone taking part. I hope they have a great time.”

Road closure information

Jubilee Road will be closed from 8am – 6pm.

The following roads will also be closed at their junction with Jubilee Rd: Guisborough St and South St.

Roads may open earlier depending on time it takes for all runners to complete the race.

There will be a signed diversion in place via the High Street and Flatts Lane.

Prior to, during and at the end of the race the following roads off Jubilee Rd will have restricted access: Station Rd, Mansfield Rd & Granwood Rd

There will also be a local road closure of Lodge Road (junction with Highfield Rd & Entrance to rear of Precinct) from 8am – 6pm.

The event village and race route will be well-signed on the day.

Free bus service

A free bus service for Lazenby residents begins at 9.30am from the bus stop on Lazenby High Street to Eston so everyone can enjoy the SABIC Eston Nab Challenge Race.

The bus will operate on a continuous ‘loop’ approximately every 30 minutes until the last bus leaves Eston at 4.30pm.

Councillor Carl Quartermain, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Communications, said: “It’s not possible to put on an event of this scale without some disruption but I’m sure the locals will agree the SABIC Eston Nab Challenge Race will be worth the minor inconvenience of the temporary road closures.

“Events like ‘The Nab’ are an essential part of our local life and economy and I’d like to congratulate those who have worked so hard to bring this day to Eston and wish all the runners the best of luck.”

The SABIC Eston Nab Challenge Race is a partnership of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, event sponsors SABIC and race organisers Hardmoors.
