SOUTH TYNESIDE’S leading theatre has got in on the act – and created a special menu to support the first South Tyneside Restaurant Week.
The Customs House at Mill Dam, has come up with a special menu with a distinct North East flavour, which will be available at both lunch times and evenings from October 3 to 10.
Diners will be able to choose from starters including Ham and Pease Pudding Soup served with a stottie and locally caught mussels, with main courses dishes such as Beef and Newcastle Brown Ale Stew with Herb Dumplings.
The Restaurant Week menu offers a range of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes with a choice of traditional English desserts such as bread and butter pudding with clotted cream and apple and rhubarb crumble.
The special menu is available at £9.50 for two courses and £13 for three.
“We are delighted to be part of the first South Tyneside Restaurant Week,” said Ray Spencer, Executive Director at The Customs House.
“And we thought there was nothing better than us offering some dishes with a real local connection, particularly since we’ve just had such a successful run of Geordie The Musical.
“This is a great opportunity for people to come along and enjoy the dishes of their childhood or to introduce the younger generation to the North East’s culinary heritage – and they can enjoy a meal before or after a show or film.”
Ray added: “The week coincides with the theatre staging The Duke In The Cupboard, a fascinating true story about a stolen work of art, so what better way to enjoy great regional food than to combine it with great regional theatre.”
The Customs House is one of scores of venues who are taking part in South Tyneside Restaurant Week, all offering discounts, deals and special offers.
South Tyneside Restaurant Week has been created by South Tyneside Council to help boost tourism in the borough and showcase the range of eateries the area has to offer.
Restaurants and cafes in Jarrow, Hebburn, Boldon and South Shields are all taking part, giving visitors and local residents a huge selection of offers to choose from.
Councillor Alan Kerr, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council, with responsibility for Culture and Leisure, said he was delighted with the support given to the event by restaurants in the borough.
“Everyone has fully embraced our first Restaurant Week and there is a huge variety of cuisines for people to choose from and enjoy,” he said.
“It is going to be a fantastic event and we hope as many people as possible will take part.”
