Tickets are being snapped-up fast for a huge Diwali celebration next month (October 30) which aims to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Sunderland’s Stadium of Light will play host to an evening of fine food and entertainment in a colourful party atmosphere to raise money for Sunderland AFC’s charity, Foundation of Light.

Bollywood dancers will entertain guests who will then get the chance to shine on the dancefloor themselves with an Indian Bollywood DJ, while the ladies can enjoy a Henna Corner and there will also be a colourful fireworks display.

For food lovers there will be a Chaat counter, street food carts and a Grand Diwali buffet featuring everything from curries and rice dishes to salads and poppadums. A packed dessert bar will offer an array of tasty sweet treats, while guests can enjoy a selection of delicious Diwali drinks.

Sunderland AFC decided to host this landmark event after being approached by Sunderland businessman Umesh Patel MBE DL, who wanted to create a huge celebration for the five day Festival of Lights which coincides with the Hindu New Year.

“I have always wanted to see a huge Diwali festival here in Sunderland and there is no better venue for the Festival of Lights than the Stadium of Light,” he said. “We are working hard to create the biggest and best event of this kind to be ever held in Sunderland.

“Not only do we hope to make his an annual event, we want to raise as much money as possible for the Foundation of Light.”

Gary Hutchinson, Commercial Director at Sunderland AFC, said he is delighted to be able to support such an important event. “Hosting a Diwali event is a new one for us and we are very excited to be a part of it,” he said.

“Mr Patel and the team have prepared an incredible evening of entertainment with Bollywood dancers and fine food, and we are thrilled to be able to support such an important occasion.

“We have had a fantastic response so far with business looking to get on board and tickets are selling really well. We are confident our Diwali celebrations will help raise a good amount of money for the Foundation of Light.”
