Tipples with history at North East bar

A MULTI award-winning bar in the North East is offering visitors the chance to rewind time and enjoy a glass from the past with a unique drinks menu.

City Tavern at Northumberland Road, Newcastle is renowned for its extensive range of drinks which includes more than 30 rums and 60 gins – but now it is also offering visitors the opportunity to try out a range of rare, vintage spirits.

The Desperate Measures menu features vodka, whisky, rum and gin which are being stocked after an intensive search to find these highly prized offerings, with some dating back to the 1950s.

These include Italian vodka Voskaya and Hennessy Bras D’or Cognac, both from the 1960s, a 1950s Morin 8 year Calvados and the bar’s current pièce de résistance, Old Parr blended scotch whisky from the 1950s, which is £49.95 a shot.

The dedicated team at City Tavern have spent a huge amount of time sourcing the aged spirits and staff member, James Seabridge-Cooper, is delighted with the bar’s selection so far.

“Our Desperate Measures menu has become really popular with people who know and appreciate very special spirits,” he said.

“We’ve always offered a huge range of spirits but these really are something different and once each bottle is gone we won’t be able to replace it, we will have to find an equally as interesting, vintage tipple.”

Many of the distillers of the current stock – such as Macdonald Greenlees and Williams which produced the Old Parr blended scotch and Italian vodka makers Voskaya – are no longer in operation, making their spirits even more valuable.

City Tavern was taken over by David King early in 2014 and then enjoyed a £450k refurbishment to create a state-of-the-art bar while still retaining the venue’s historic features.

Along with its range of spirits and craft ales, the bar also offers a range of homemade comfort food on its all day menu.
