Mr Ron Murray of Redcar has been awarded the Légion d’Honneur at a Civic Reception at The Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart. This is the highest honour France can bestow and was established by Napoleon in 1802.

The award is rarely given to non-French nationals, but to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day, this special medal is being awarded to veterans who helped in any way in the liberation of France.

Anna Turley MP for Redcar, Amanda Skelton Chief Executive of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and The Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Cllr Brenda Forster attended the service. Entertainment was provided by Normanby Primary School Choir who sang a medley of wartime songs.

A Civic Reception was also granted to Mr Eddie Straight, who lives in Saltburn.

Cllr Brenda Forster welcomed Mr Straight to the Mayor’s Parlour in Redcar and had written to the Queen to tell of his achievements and service. A response from The Queen’s Lady-in-Waiting has since been received.

The letter reads: “Although unable to write to Mr Straight personally, as you request, Her Majesty would be pleased if you would tell him that The Queen has heard with admiration of his many acts of bravery and fortitude, and of his remarkable resilience throughout the dark and challenging days of World War II.”

Cllr Forster said: “I am delighted The Queen has recognised Eddie Straight’s achievements, and I was honoured to grant him a Civic Reception which he thoroughly deserves.

“Listening to Mr Murray’s and Mr Straight’s stories has been so inspirational, and I would like to personally thank them both for their exceptional service.”
