TyneMet students continue to prove a sporting success as another student lands a prestigious apprenticeship with one of the most well-known sporting foundations in the country.
Codie Nichols, 17 has recently been awarded an apprenticeship with Newcastle United Foundation after being successful in the Female Mentoring Programme supported by Sport Newcastle.
As the Foundation’s first female apprentice, Codie assists the full time Community Coaches in schools and clubs delivering various programmes and is currently studying Sports Coaching (Level 2) with TyneMet.
Within Codie’s apprenticeship some of her work includes visiting schools in the region to promote a range of sporting activities to keep the school children healthy.
Codie said: “By studying at TyneMet college, it has allowed me to have a lot of opportunities that have led me onto my career path. I have a huge drive for coaching and by having it as an everyday job is fantastic!
Without TyneMet college supplying me with the opportunities, I certainly wouldn’t be where I am today.
“I started playing football with the Foundation when I was 8, so it is a pleasure to be involved with it now, as an adult. I get to go into schools and promote sporting activities and healthy lifestyles.”
Codie is amongst four other students who all studied with TyneMet College that are now working for the Newcastle United Foundation. The ex-students are Joe Deverdics, Carl Chater, Andrew Johnston and Lee Fairley.
Carl Chater, 32, is a Project Officer at the Newcastle United Foundation, said: “I have been at Newcastle United Foundation for nearly two years. I am currently working in the education team delivering football based qualifications in secondary schools such as Asdan and Premier League Enterprise along with courses on exercise and nutrition in primary schools. TyneMet gave me the platform to achieve this role with the qualification and experience gained on my foundation degree.”
Kate Bradley, Head of Newcastle United Foundation added: “Our relationship with TyneMet has helped us identify talented individuals who work incredibly hard to engage, motivate and inspire some of the most disadvantaged children, young people and adults in our community. They are a real asset to our team and it’s fantastic to see them progress from students into the roles that they hold with Newcastle United Foundation today.”
Jonathan Rees, Deputy Head of Sport said: “The opportunity that Codie has been given is a fully deserved one. She has impressed throughout her time here at TyneMet and on her work placement with the Newcastle United Foundation which has provided her with the platform to demonstrate her confidence and maturity within the workplace.
“Codie is an extremely positive and very able student and we are delighted to have yet another student progress into employment within the industry and even more delighted that it is with the Newcastle United Foundation.”
