Newcastle-based charity North East Homeless (NEH) has launched a new campaign to collect underwear donations for the region’s homeless population.
The charity, which launched in 2014, provides outreach services three times a week to help homeless people in the city centre access hot food, drinks, shelter and clothing.
The ‘drop ya drawers’ campaign encourages local people to donate new underwear for both men and women, including underpants, knickers, bras and socks, to the charity instead of change.
Brian Burridge, founder of NEH, said: “It’s easy to forget how uncomfortable it feels to wear the same underwear day in, day out. We meet street friends every day who don’t feel clean because they’re sitting in the same pants they’ve had on, and slept in, for a long time.
“NEH is aware that people sometimes feel uncomfortable giving money to people on the street, as they’re worried they’ll spend it on drink or drugs. We’re asking for donations of pants, socks and bras, so that our street friends can feel human again straight away.”
