Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

South Tyneside CouncilMembers of South Tyneside Council will be updated next week on delivery of the South Shields 365 regeneration masterplan.

Councillor John Anglin, Lead Member for Regeneration and Economy, will outline the progress made by the council and its development partner Muse on the £100 million scheme.

The Word, National Centre for the Written Word, is the flagship of the regeneration, and is now in the final months of construction and set to open to the public in the autumn.

Planning permission has been granted for a new transport interchange, which is an integral part of the vision to transform the town centre. Designs for the interchange are currently being refined.

Phase 3 of the plan, which includes a five screen cinema, a multi-storey car park, retail space and café and restaurant space, has also gained outline planning permission.

Cllr Anglin said: “This will really transform the town centre, providing more choice for shoppers and lead to them spending more time there. The cinema and restaurant offers will capture economic activity by encouraging people to stay after shop closing time.”

Cllr Anglin will also update members on acquisition of land and properties needed to deliver phases 2 and 3 of the scheme.

He will present the report this week’s meeting of full Council, on June 16.
