North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

VOLUNTEERS are being sought to show off the iconic Tees Transporter Bridge to visitors from across the world.

The volunteer roles at the Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience will support the recently upgraded attraction, with duties including assisting in the Visitor Centre shop, providing guided tours of the site and helping visitors access the new lift.

Volunteers will also have the unique opportunity to lead visitors on tours to the top of the Bridge 160ft above the River Tees.

John Ivison, Transporter Bridge Supervisor, said: “The volunteering opportunities at the Transporter Bridge offer the chance to develop skills in heritage and customer service whilst also helping to support one of the region’s most important heritage sites and showcasing the Tees Valley.”

The landmark Transporter Bridge was recently extensively refurbished as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund supported project which included the installation of a new gondola and glass viewing lift alongside state-of-the-art visitor facilities and the construction of a Winding House Viewing Area.

Dr Tosh Warwick, Heritage Development Officer for Middlesbrough Council, said: “Volunteering and placement roles at the Transporter Bridge have proven very successful in recent years. A number of those who have assisted at the Bridge have gone on to draw upon the experience gained to access higher education courses, secure teaching positions, work in the heritage sector and develop careers in events and public relations.”
