YOUNG volunteers are being sought to support this year’s Summer Reading Challenge in Stockton-on-Tees.

The Council’s Libraries Service is looking for 16 to 24-year-olds who are able to volunteer for a minimum of 10 hours over the summer holidays.

The challenge, which is aimed at children aged four to 11, is to read six library books during the summer holidays.

The Council’s Director of Culture, Leisure and Events, Reuben Kench, said: “This is a great opportunity for young volunteers to help our friendly libraries staff run the Summer Reading Challenge.

“Volunteers will talk to children about the books they’ve been reading, help them to choose new books, and deliver fun activities and craft sessions. They will also gain valuable work experience and a reference for employment.”

The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is ‘Animal Agents – Read the books, catch the crook!’

Every time a reader finishes a book they get incentives and those completing the challenge will receive a certificate and a medal.

The deadline for applications is Friday 26 May. For an volunteer application form contact the Council’s Children and Young Person’s Librarian, Lucy Carlton-Walker, on 01642 528501 or email lucy.carlton-walker@stockton.gov.uk
