Shoppers visiting Teesside over the next five weeks can expect to receive a larger than life welcome, as a giant LEGO elephant and gorilla have arrived for the summer.

The brick animals, which are up to two and a half metres tall and can be found outside Mothercare, have been built as part of Teesside’s programme of free jungle-themed family activities running throughout the school summer holidays (28th July – 30th August).

The jungle takeover will also see Teesside host a range of free events for little ones every Wednesday and Thursday between 11am and 4pm. These will be run by resident explorers ‘Molly Mangroves’ and ‘Vinny Vine-Swinger’ and include LEGO workshops where kids can learn how to build their favourite wild animals and play animal-themed games.

There will also be a large sandpit, where children can search for rainforest critters while parents can relax on the seating area, and a jungle base camp full of puzzles and games.

Mike Clarke, Centre Director at Teesside, said: “We have a lot of visitors to Teesside, but this is our first elephant and gorilla! I’m sure they’ll go down really well with families and I think there will be the odd selfie or two as well. We’ll be looking out for the best of them on social media.

“We’ve got a brilliant calendar of free activities lined up over the coming weeks, from fun LEGO brick workshops to animal-themed craft sessions, so we hope this will help parents keep the kids entertained throughout the summer holidays.”

The full list of free events, which will all take place outside Mothercare, includes:
