WORKS to improve the traffic flow at one of the busiest junctions in Middlesbrough get under at the weekend.
The junction of the A1085 Longlands Road, King’s Road and Ormesby Road carries up to 3,000 vehicles an hour, and drivers regularly experience delays and congestion at busy times.
The improvement scheme will improve the resilience of the junction and its ability to handle heavy traffic flows during the morning and evening peak periods.
Work at the junction will start on Monday, July 24, with completion expected by early September.
In order to minimise disruption to traffic the scheme has been programmed to coincide with the school summer holidays when flows are lighter, and the contractor will work seven days a week to ensure that the works are completed as soon as possible.
Lane closures will also be restricted to off-peak periods to maximise traffic flow.
Councillor Lewis Young, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Economic Development and Infrastructure, said: “Keeping traffic moving on the borough’s road network is crucial to the delivery of the town’s ambitious regeneration proposals, and the improvement scheme at the junction of Longlands Road and King’s Road is a key part of that strategy.
“Because the junction is so busy there will, inevitably, be some disruption while the improvement works are under way.
“I would, therefore, ask drivers to allow extra time for their journey or to use an alternative route if possible, and apologise for any inconvenience caused during this important project.”
