The ‘come dine with me’ scheme teaches them how to plan and cook meals, budget for them and take on the social skills needed to dine together.

It was initially aimed at around ten 16 to 21 year olds living in the YMCA’s Castle Mews accommodation – people who have been homeless or who have been at risk of being homeless. But it has been extended to take in all young people across the district.

The project received £500 from the council’s Area Partnership Fund to add to cash from Greggs Community Fund and the YMCA.

The project sees youngsters attend an initial ‘come dine with me’ evening before sessions on meal planning, budgeting, food preparation and safe storage. Chefs and growing food courses may also follow.

“This project is designed to bring young people together to build relationships and aid community cohesion,” said Chairman of the Richmondshire Area Partnership Fund, Councillor Stuart Parsons.

“The initial come dine with me prompted lots of enthusiasm and with the council’s £500 the group can be expanded. The scheme is just the sort of initiative we are looking to support through this fund.”

And one of the young people, Katie Robinson, aged 16 added: “Through the project I have made new friends, learned new skills, tried new foods and enjoyed the yummy food.”
