10 Things You Should Avoid In a Job Interview

Do continuous rejections disappoint you? No, I’m not talking about those WhatsApp or Facebook’s rejections. It’s a matter of your job interviews. Have you ever thought that why the interview of your dream job didn’t well successful? If you think that you were not a suitable candidate then you are on the wrong track.

Receiving an interview call justifies that you are a suitable person; there is something else which turned your interview game into an unsuccessful move. What’s that? I’m sure that you haven’t figured it out yet. Well, this is to let you all know that if you haven’t identified or failed to identify the reason behind first rejection in a job interview then get ready to witness more. Yes, this may sound brutal and rude but, somehow it’s true.

Only if you are willing to know then let me help you in finding those bugs which marked a negative impact on your personality. Below, I’m listing twelve reasons which one should avoid at the time of interview. Keep your focus and eyes on the list and checkmarks the ones you think you have done, intentionally or unintentionally.

1. First and foremost- don’t be late

This is the most common and at the very same side, the worst thing about interviews. Yes, I understand that it wasn’t your mistake; the road was all packed with several cars, I know that the map didn’t guide you accurately and you kept wandering on roads. But, guess what? Nobody cares! Isn’t it’s better to leave half an hour early, isn’t it’s good to visit the place a day before your interview? All of this may sound little and ordinary but these are the things which make or break your reputation. So, if you fail to make your first impression good, then don’t expect anything in more.

2. Don’t go all down- act professionally

Do you know by saying ‘don’t go all down’ what I meant? Don’t too casual with the attendee. Take it easy! You are not invited to the party. Well, acting professionally never gives you a license for being rude. Just be polite and professional. Greet your attendee or even interviewer in a polite and professional tone. The way you appear says a lot about you. Keep your excitement within you and instead of going all loud and eager, try to stay calm. Besides this, try to make soft eye contact while greeting. This thing counts, I repeat, your expressions counts!

3. Stop looking at your wristwatch

Even if something very important is on pending, just don’t look at your watch. This gives a negative impact on yours. What? If I say that your interviewer is keeping an eye of an eagle, on you. Many times candidates act weirdly, like looking at a watch or sitting in complete lazy postures. You might not know, but the camera is capturing you. Doesn’t matter if you are sitting in the waiting area or the meeting room, make sure your presence is not sending negative vibes. Once you hit your feet in the building, be careful!

4. Don’t forget to carry hard copy of resume

These days, candidates don’t prefer taking the hard copy of their resume and I wonder why! I know the world has changed its perspective from traditional to modernization. But, just like the trend of having one-on-one interaction in an interview could never get old. Similarly, the rule of carrying a resume could never change. One more thing, please avoid writing swimming and travelling as your hobbies. This destroys the essence of resume. I mean what concern an organization could have in your hobbies? So, before forwarding your CV, always get it to check by the professionals. You can also take help from any online resume writing service.

5. Avoid being too extra with your dress

Does that redshirt suit you? Cool! But, if you are thinking to wear vibrant colours in your interview then please STOP! No matter how perfect that catchy colour looks on you, wearing it at the time of interview could never be a wise decision. Being too extra with your dress and looking like a pop art could portray a negative impression of yours. You need to look sophisticated and decent and for this, putting your hands on elegant yet light colours is the best option to go for. You can look handsome or pretty in pastel colours too, this is all that you need to understand.

6. Keep a keen focus on your words

What you utter reveals your personality. That is why it is always recommended to first think and then say, especially at the time of your interview. Remember that recruiters have no space of apology! It’s all like a game of doing and dies- your one wrong move and the game is over. Therefore, you need to stay focused and mentally present. Instead of being too prompt to reply, try to take a second of pause and then answer.

7. Resist being your fan

I’m the best! What if I say this? How does this sound by the way? To me, this sound too absurd to even repeat. You, recruiters, are your judges, let them judge and make a decision. Resist being your fan. None of your interviewers is investing time just to listen about how much people admire you and how your friends praise you. Please avoid creating your boundaries of appreciation. Besides this, try to make a productive yet valuable interaction.

8. Overconfidence can put you in trouble

Don’t tell your interviewer that you can multi-task and can do anything. This can put you in real trouble. You are not the first one to claim. Previously many others made the same statement and oh, your interviewer knows how to untie the folded pleats. So please, don’t be overconfident. Stay honest and sincere. Your sugar-coated lies can never help you in taking leads although it can bring your reputation down, for sure.

9. Avoid sounding too desperate

This is the very obvious fact that you need a job. Sounding too desperate is not a good choice. Not all things are meant to be revealed, some need to keep hidden. Yes, this is your dream job and you can do anything for it. But, this thing should be a top-secret of yours, don’t fall from grace. Keep your demands and employee rights on point. This doesn’t mean you can demand irrelevantly, all you are supposed to do is to persuade your recruiter, despite being too desperate.

10. Use a tool of engagement

This is your last chance to prove yourself. Get a strong grip on the engaging trick. Make a lasting discussion with your recruiters and don’t let them feel bored. Answer the questions in a highly interesting manner and make your interviewer feel WOW. In a nutshell, develop good yet effective communication skills. After all, communication is that crucial part which indicates about your instincts and personality.

Apart from the mentioned ones, there could be many other reasons which could put your hopes into disappointments. Feel free to add more to the list and try to overcome all of the flaws.
