With spring in full swing, local housebuilder Barratt Homes North East has been helping primary schools across the North East learn about the importance of protecting wildlife in their local area by making their gardens more wildlife friendly.
As part of this activity, the housebuilder gifted the pupils of Toner Avenue Primary School and Hazlewood Community Primary School with wildlife kits to transform their outdoor spaces, and now have packs at their sales office for the community to come and collect too.
The teams from Barratt Homes’ The Maples development in Hebburn, and North Gosforth Park development in North Gosforth, visited the schools to gift the Year 5 classes the packs and hold a session about the importance of caring for local wildlife in their homes. This educational activity taught the children how they can take simple steps to encourage local wildlife including birds, bats, butterflies and bees.
Whilst there, the Barratt team also presented the school with a selection of items fit for all creatures great and small, including a bat box, three bird feeders, wildflower seeds and bird feed packs, which will be placed in the school’s garden for everybody to enjoy.
Becky Mortimer, Sales Manager at North Gosforth Park, commented: “We had great fun with the pupils at Hazlewood Community School, and we’re really pleased to have had the opportunity to inspire the children to take simple steps towards implementing a wildlife friendly environment in their own homes. We are also excited to be offering the local community the opportunity to come down to the development and collect their own wildlife kits, and hope that this activity will help to give more nature a home in Newcastle across the spring.”
Elizabeth Patterson, Class Teacher at Hazlewood Community School, commented: “We’d like to thank Barratt Homes North East for gifting us the wildlife friendly garden kits and accessories. I know that the children are very excited to start planting the seeds, and we’ll definitely be looking out for more birds around the school playgrounds after the installation of the new bird boxes!”
Alex Feeney, Class Teacher and Eco Coordinator at Toner Avenue Primary, commented: “We had a lovely afternoon with Barratt Homes North East, and would like to thank them for teaching the pupils about the importance of protecting the wildlife in their local area. The children are particularly interested in the environment at the moment, so it was fantastic to host such an engaging talk!”
