Teesside born and bred ukulele superstar and BBC Radio Young Folk Awards nominee Amelia Coburn is spreading her wings and wowing audiences across Europe and, soon, further afield. Having jetted off to work in Paris until December as part of her languages degree Amelia has not been able to avoid interest from promoters and artists wanting her to perform for them. David Gedge of indie legends The Wedding Present was so moved by her performance at his At The Edge Of The Sea festival in Brighton through the summer that he invited her to support the group at a gig in Paris in October. Her beautiful, often haunting interpretations of new wave, punk and classic pop covers alongside her dreamlike, folk-tinged originals are a perfect bend for an international audience. She was, most recently, headhunted to play the Berlin Ukulele Festival when they realised she was on the continent and where again she left the audience breathless and sold out of her merchandise in minutes as the audience clamoured to grab a piece of memorabilia. With her travels and work taking her next to Mexico and then Russia, with interest in both already for performances, she’s leaving her mark everywhere she goes. Her management are forever courting well known acts who want to work and record with her and working to juggle her existing commitments.

North East fans need not worry too much though as she is set to return, briefly, around Christmas and has three intimate shows booked in. 23rd Decemebr sees her joining David Benjamin (who appeared on a gorgeous duet with Amelia, covering No Surprises by Radiohead) and Teesside acoustic power-pop duo Cherry Head, Cherry Heart at Stockton’s Music Lounge. The line-up recreates one from a few years back when Amelia was just starting out. 28th December and Amelia plays the fantastic Old Cinema Launderette in Durham. The following day she heads a little further north to the brilliant Exchange venue in North Shields where she has a devoted audience.
