An apprentice is joining Capita’s Building Control’s team on North Tyneside thanks to an award-winning scheme.
Kyle Mason, from Wallsend, has been taking part in PlanBEE, a training initiative where apprentices gain a variety of experience by working with six employers in turn alongside their studies at Gateshead College.
The project won the national Building Skills Initiative of the Year award for 2017 and was formed by Ryder Architecture and Gateshead College.
Kyle successfully applied to join North Tyneside Building Control during his placement with the team, which is based on Cobalt Business Park.
He starts his employment in September and will combine his work with an LABC (Local Authority Building Control)-approved Building Control distance-learning degree at Wolverhampton University.
Kyle said: “I am delighted to be joining a great Building Control team.
“Having experienced a variety of different roles in construction on the PlanBEE scheme – building control was the area that immediately stood out for me and suited my skill-set.
“I look forward to further developing my skills and knowledge of building control and hope to become a valuable member of the team.”
North Tyneside Building Control is a service provided for North Tyneside Council by Capita. Based on Cobalt Business Park, the team’s role includes ensuring building work is compliant with building regulations legislation plus safeguarding the health and safety of people around buildings.
It is the only local authority regulatory service that operates in direct competition with the private sector.
The Building Control team created a training strategy to support each apprentice through their placement.

“All the students we have hosted, including Kyle, have shown an excellent level of interest, initiative and maturity as well as receiving an in-depth understanding of the building control profession.
“Other sponsor companies seem to agree that the quality of student is excellent and has been much needed in the North East construction industry.”
