Annual lecture prescribes pharmacy profession to relieve NHS pressures

Screen Shot 2015-09-23 at 12.12.34Pressures facing the NHS and how the pharmacy profession can help to meet those challenges will be examined at an annual lecture.

The University of Sunderland’s Hope Winch lecture invites guests to hear from a distinguished pharmacy professional. It was set up in memory of Hope Constance Monica Winch who arrived in Sunderland 94 years ago with an ambitious plan to set up the finest pharmacy department in the North East and was instrumental in its development.

This year’s lecture will see Mark Burdon, a practicing community pharmacist and Sunderland graduate, present ‘Preparing for 2018 – NHS Priorities and Pharmacy Service Development’.

Mark, is a senior member for the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee, (PSNC), which promotes and supports the interests of all NHS community pharmacies in England, and as a practicing community pharmacist, takes an active interest in the future development of the profession.

Mark said: “I’m delighted to be giving the Hope Winch lecture this year. I have continued to maintain strong links with the University of Sunderland, having graduated from the School of Pharmacy in 1999. It remains one of the leading schools in the UK, with an excellent reputation.”

He added: “These are exciting times for pharmacy – in all sectors – with the NHS finding itself under unprecedented financial pressures. Pharmacy can play a part in meeting the challenges over the coming years. There are some great opportunities for the profession, as well as a number of threats. We must promote ourselves to policy makers, propose solutions and above all be able to deliver on our promises.

“I am hoping to stimulate debate and confront some of the most controversial current issues in pharmacy.”

Dr Paul Carter, Hope Winch Society Chairman and senior lecturer in pharmacy, said: “We are delighted and honoured that Mark Burdon will be giving this year’s lecture.

“Mark has had a major impact on the profession in a time of great economic and technological change and he understands the challenges and opportunities for pharmacy moving forward.”

After Hope Winch’s death in 1944, the Hope Winch Memorial Committee was set up and formed the Hope Winch Memorial Scholarship, a prize awarded to the most proficient 2nd year pharmacy student.

The annual lecture takes place on Thursday, October 15.  Registration, buffet and networking will take place in The Sciences Complex, City Campus, at 6.30pm. The lecture starts at 7.30pm.

All University staff, students, alumni and members of the public are invited to attend this free event. All guests must pre-register at alumni@sunderland.ac.uk by Thursday, October 8.
