Apprentices build careers with Miller Homes

MILLER Homes North East has recruited four apprentices, giving some of the region’s school leavers vital experience and training, producing much-needed skilled workers for the future.

The new apprentice joiners will be based on site across Miller Homes’ North East developments, as the housebuilder supports the industry in tackling the skills gap. Two employees have also been promoted to trainee assistant site managers, helping to future-proof its workforce.

Over the next two years the new starters; Adam Corbett, 16 from Killingworth, based at Heritage Green in Backworth; Owen Rees, 16 from Ashington, based at Wheatfields in Seaton Delaval; Josh Turner, 16 from Newbiggin, based at Portland Wynd in Blyth; and Luke Hodgson, 16 from County Durham, based at Scholars Gate in Houghton-le-Spring; will combine practical work and training with college studies, resulting in a recognised qualification and potential full time job offer.

Meanwhile, trainee assistant site managers Simon Wealleans, 40 from Newbiggin, based at Wheatfields in Seaton Delaval, and Craig West, 29 from Seghill, based at Portland Wynd in Blyth, are working closely with the developments’ assistant site managers gaining on-the-job experience, and are progressing well with their training.

Patrick Arkle, operations director at Miller Homes North East, said: “Being able to recruit is always a great position to be in and I’m pleased to have welcomed four new apprentices to the North East team. We highly value the importance of giving young people that first step on the career ladder and providing them with a high standard of training, work experience and the possibility of a permanent job offer.

“Our new apprentices have joined the business at an exciting time as we are actively working to grow our presence in the region, with four development launches coming soon as well as more to follow over the next 12 months and beyond. This growth has also opened up opportunities for internal promotions and it’s great to see Simon and Craig stepping up to trainee assistant site managers having had a successful 2016 with the business – I wish them all the best with their training.”
