Arch 2 gains planning consent

Arch2 Scene 5HarperPerry have successfully gained planning consent to convert an old tyre yard on Stepney Bank in the Ouseburn, Newcastle into a new mixed use brewery venue.

The plans double the space currently available and will support a new home for a local micro-brewery, tap bar, café and workshops around a semi-enclosed courtyard.

Arch 2 combines the refurbishment of an existing, single-storey workshop building with a new two storey workshop extension. The development is being initiated by Mike and Leo Bell of local brewery company Newcastle Brewing Ltd. and is being funded by local residents keen to encourage small and local businesses to settle in the area.

The proposals draw on the rich diversity of material derived from past and present uses in wider Ouseburn Valley. The design has been driven by a palette comprised of industrial and found materials all sourced from within a mile radius of the site. The finished proposal will combine a mixture of recycled steel trusses, polycarbonate panels, corrugated steel, painted brick, tarpaulin fabrics and large industrial doors.

Claire Harper from HarperPerry Architects said: “the success of the project to date comes from an enthusiastic client and the support of local residents who want to promote and support small scale and locally based development in the Ouseburn Valley. The client is transforming an unassuming industrial yard into, what could be, a lively hub and event space for the local community.”

Work will begin on the site in the coming months once a contractor has been appointed and the brewery hope to move in late 2016.
