Book A Place As A Volunteer For Reading Challenge

Book-lovers are being asked to give up some of their free time this summer to help encourage children to read.

South Tyneside libraries are looking for people who can help deliver this year’s Summer Reading Challenge during the six weeks of the summer holidays.

The volunteers will be asked to help children choose books and take part in crafts, games and other activities during the Challenge which is aimed at encouraging children to maintain a love of reading.

Volunteers need to be aged 15 or over, and should be friendly and enthusiastic and enjoy working with children and young people. They need to be available for two hours or more each week during July and August.

Councillor Alan Kerr, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council with responsibility for Leisure and Culture, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to learn some new skills and get valuable work experience.

“We hope young people will volunteer for these rewarding opportunities to help keep our youngsters entertained and maintain their appetite for books at libraries across the Borough during the school holidays.”

Anyone wanting to apply or find out more about becoming a volunteer is asked to contact Pauline Martin on (0191) 4282318.
