Care home and choir raise hundreds for Parkinson’s UK

HUNDREDS of pounds were raised at a North Yorkshire care home to support those living with Parkinson’s.

Hazelgrove Court Care Home, on Randolph Street, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, held an event, called The Big Help Out, to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK’s.

Choir group The Tremeloes, which includes several of the care home’s residents, performed on the day, when there was also a raffle, tombola, guess the name of the bear game, and a craft stall.

Dozens of residents, staff, their family members and friends, enjoyed the day’s activities, helping to raise £425 for the charity.

Joyce Wooffindin, 81, and Ellen Else, 91, both residents at Hazelgrove Court Care Home, are members of the Tremeloes choir and sang on the day.

Joyce, who has been a choir singer for many years and studied music to Level 8, said: “There is nothing better than singing. It’s good for the heart and the soul.”

For residents Judith Pearson, 78, and Joan Johnson, 90, the event felt personal as both have lost family members to Parkinson’s. Joan said: “Raising money for Parkinson’s UK is important as it may one day help to find a cure for this disease.”

Judith added: “Parkinson’s UK is a wonderful charity and any money raised helps them.”

Resident Betty Boyes, 92, lives with Parkinson’s. She said: “By raising money it helps those who suffer with this disease. It was lovely to have the choir sing at our home.”

Sharon Lewis, activities coordinator at Hazelgrove Court Care Home, is also a member of the Tremeloes. She said: “We all had such a fantastic day raising funds for Parkinson’s UK and want to thank everyone who came along for their generosity.

“It was also a pleasure to sing at the event as part of the Tremeloes, alongside Ellen and Joyce. Singing brings so many benefits. It’s not just the singing though, it’s the social aspect of being out in the community and meeting new people. It helps to raise everyone’s spirits and boosts wellbeing.

“The Tremeloes are performing on 10th June at the New Marske Sport and Social Club, in Redcar, in aid of family carers, and both ladies will be there. We’d love to see as many people as possible to help raise money for another, very worthy cause.”
